A Woman in Buleleng Died from Rabies
Denpasar - Until mid 2010, rabies in Bali is still spreading. Both provincial and district/municipal government has not succeeded in stopping the disease, which continues to claim human lives.
Even though new cases have not been heard in the last few days, victims keep on falling. This time, Nengah Suri, age 53, has become a victim. She died yesterday (25/5) around 05.30 am.
Nengah is from Uma Anyar village in Seririt, Buleleng. She died several hours after she was submitted to Sanglah Hospital at 02.00 am on Tuesday. She was diagnosed with rabies based on clinical signs.
The diagnosis was confirmed after the hospital’s medical team conducted several lab tests. Moreover, Nengah also suffered water and light phobia.
Secretary of the Rabies Mitigation Team in Sanglah Hospital, dr. Ken Wirasandhi MARS, on Tuesday (25/5) confirmed the rabies fatality. The victim was bitten by a dog 2 months ago on her fingers. Unfortunately, Nengah never received medical treatment for her wounds.
More unfortunate was that she never received antirabies vaccine after the incident. “Laboratory tests confirmed the victim had rabies. Tests were conducted on her saliva and tears,” said dr. Ken.
So far, there have been 46 patients submitted to the hospital that had died because of rabies.
Meanwhile, around 14.10 on Tuesday (25/5), a dog bite victim from Karangasem was referred to Sanglah Hospital after receiving medical treatment at Karangasem General Hospital. The patient, Ni Wayan Sari, age 45, had considerably serious wounds, a total of 3 bite wounds on her left hand.
She was attacked by a mad dog when scavenging garbage by the road. The worst of the wounds was on her index finger, with severe depth and size. “They gave me antirabies vaccine there [Karangasem General Hospital], but I here [Sanglah Hospital] right away,” she said. (mar)
