A Veterinary Law will be Issued
The Directorate General of Livestock from the Ministry of Agriculture, Tjeppy D Soedjana, targeted that the draft on Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Law will be legalized and issued by March 2008. According to Tjeppy, the new law will protect the livestock industry from disease infections through biosecurity. Even, he said, another law should be made especially for zoonotic diseases so it could be handled effectively.
A similar comment was made by Bomer Pasaribu, member of Commission IV in the parliament. He said the new Animal Husbandry and Animal Health law will accommodate perspectives concerning biosecurity requirements. He also said that the slow work regarding zoonotic diseases, particularly bird flu, was because the Indonesian government still does not have a National Animal Health Networking System under a Veterinary Law, which regulates communicable animal diseases, including zoonotic diseases.
