Vendors Worried Dead Chicken Carcasses Sold during Fasting Month
Cianjur - A number of beef and chicken vendors in Cianjur, West Java, are worried some people will sell glonggongan meat (meat derived from cattle fed with large amounts of water before slaughtered to increase the weight of meat yield) and dead chicken carcasses during the fasting month of Ramadhan 1431 H. They hope related government offices will take anticipative measures.
Vendors say the presence of glonggongan meat and dead chicken carcasses in the market will ruin public views on their products. Therefore vendors are urging the government to prevent glonggongan meat and dead chicken carcasses from entering Cianjur.
“We urge authorized government offices or police to strengthen supervision on chicken and beef coming from outside Cianjur,” said Dadang (37), a beef vendor in Cianjur Central Market.
During the holy month of Ramadhan, there is high demand for meat, while supply is limited. This condition entices some people to sell illegal unhealthy meat.
”We can guarantee that vendors in Cianjur will not sell those kinds of meat, but we are concerned about products from outside of the city,” he said.
Surya (40), a chicken carcass vendor in the central market hopes Cianjur will be free from dead chicken carcasses because it could ruin the market price and endanger the health of the people who buy it.
For public assurance, Surya slaughters the chickens he sells in front of his customers.
”I have done this practice since 3 years ago and customers are sure that the chickens I sell are fresh kills and not dead birds,” he said.
But he and numerous others hope authorized government offices, the Livestock and Fishery Service Office and the Industry and Trade Service Office, will consistently conduct monitoring and inspection.
Head of the Industry and Trade Service Office of Cianjur, M Ginanjar, said they have formed a special monitoring team to anticipate possible introduction and sale of glonggongan meat and dead chicken carcass.
“Besides conducting inspection during Ramadhan, our team will conduct daily monitoring involving all related parties, including the market management,” he said.
To ensure the public, the government will conduct clinical inspection on meat and chicken carcasses sold in the market.
“Veterinarians from the Livestock and Fishery Service Office will be conducting inspection, particularly on imported meat,” he said. (FKR/K004)
