Sudden Die Off of Hundreds of Poultry in South Lampung

Kalianda, South Lampung - Hundreds of poultry owned by citizens in South Lampung district, Lampung province, have suddenly died from [a suspected] Avian Influenza infection.
According to information from Tarmin, citizen of Kertosari village in Tanjungsari subdistrict, on Saturday, the event occurred since the last few days.
Hundreds of poultry owned by citizens of the village had suddenly died, Tarmin said. The attack, which occurred in native chickens, happened in only a few days.

He explained that clinical findings found in dead birds were consistent with Avian Influenza symptoms, which were bluish combs, clear to thick discharge from the beak, and distributed hemorrhaging on the leg in the form of red spots.
“Sick birds died overnight without exception,” he said.
Locals, he said, don’t know whether it is Avian Influenza or not because the local Livestock Service Office has yet examined or performed rapid tests.
A similar statement was mentioned by another citizen on site, Handoyo.
He said the attack occurred in the last couple of days with tens of birds dying overnight.
He said a number of dead chickens have been thrown away into the river without any knowledge or care of the disease being transmitted to humans.
So far, he said, the local Livestock Service Office has yet deployed a team to conduct rapid tests because the outbreak coincided with Eid al-Fitr holidays.
”We hope officers form the Livestock Service will immediately respond to this event before the disease infects human,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Livestock Service Office and head of the Animal Health Division of South Lampung district could not be contacted for confirmation of this event.(ANT-048/K004)
