Sudden Die Off of Hundreds of Poultry

GARUT – Approximately 620 poultry owned by citizens of Cimadundung adn Cinamo sub-village of Toblong village in Peundeuy sub-district, Garut, suddenly died on Wednesday (16/1). This caused concern to the local people.
“We are worried that our chickens died because of the famous bird flu,” said Jajang (42 years old), citizen of Cinamo, on Thurday (17/1).
Resources said that poultry death in the two closely neighboring sub-villages was very sudden. In the day before, citizens said that their poultry were alright, even when it returned to its houses or cages which are commonly located beneath its owner’s house.
But the next morning, hundreds of poultry were found dead. “We were shocked. Because it is the first time so many of our poultry suddenly died,” said Jajang, whom 9 of his 12 chickens died.

Another citizen, Udin, said they suspected the poultry death was caused by Newcastle Disease. Even so, they were also worried that it was not caused by Newcastle Disease, but by bird flu. “It would be bad later on if that [bird flu] was the case,” he said.
Head of the Livestock, Fisheries, and Marine Services Office, Ir. Andi Rahmat, confirmed the sudden die off of poultry in two sub-villages in south Garut. Regarding that case, his office will not stand still.
“One of the things we do is examine the dead chickens. Hopefully they did not die because of bird flu,” said Andi and Drs. Dikdik Hendrajaya, Head of the Public Relations Division of the Regional Secretariat of Garut. (A-112)***
