Slaughterhouse Close to Bankruptcy Due to Imported Beef
MALANG-- The local slaughterhouse of Malang city is close to bankruptcy. The main cause is imported beef, which is sold cheaper than the price of local beef. “There are several factors contributing to decreased slaughter in the slaughterhouse, but the most fatal is high sale of imported beef in Malang city,” said director of the slaughterhouse, Djoko Sutadi, on Tuesday (13/4). He explained that the volume of imported beef coming into Malang city is quite high and the price of the meat is cheaper than local beef.
Based on the data he has, imported beef is sold at Rp. 39,000,- per kilogram, while local beef is sold at Rp. 70,000,- per kilogram. “This seems to be the main cause, but there is another influencing factor,” he said.
The factor he meant was reduction in beef consumption in Malang city. It is because people are preferring chicken over beef.
The price of chicken is far cheaper than beef, the retail price is only Rp. 20,000,- to Rp. 24,000,- per kilogram. This large price difference is believed to be the main reason why people prefer chicken, because it is cheaper.
That is why, he said, that cattle slaughter in the slaughterhouse is always decreasing each year. In 2010 the slaughterhouse only processes 40 to 50 heads of cattle each day, while in previous years they slaughtered 60 to 70 heads of cattle everyday.
For the slaughterhouse to continue to exist, he said, they needed a new breakthrough. What they did was diversify the business. “Therefore we opened a restaurant. Because if not the slaughterhouse would go bankrupt since slaughtering has decreased by approximately 10 percent,” he said.
