Quarantine Officers Confiscate Smuggled Chicks

Pontianak - Officers from the Class I Agriculture Quarantine Agency of Pontianak confiscated 600 day old chicks (DOC) from a vendor in Puring Market, Pontianak city, West Kalimantan, on Wednesday (9/2/2011). The chicks were smuggled from Malaysia because the price is cheaper compared to chicks sold from breeders in Pontianak.
Head of the Action and Monitoring Section of the quarantine agency, Faisyal Noer, said the smuggled chicks were confiscated because the health status is unknown. “The chicks don’t have a certificate, which makes them a risk,” said Faisyal.

Chick owner, Sood (67), said he acquired the chicks from Kuching. “I bought them for Rp 5,000 per chick and was planning to sell them for Rp 6,000 per chick,” said Sood. Besides it potential of carrying disease, the smuggling also disrupts the local DOC market. Currently local DOC are sold at Rp 8,250 per chick. (Agustinus Handoko|Ed:A. Wisnubrata)
