Poultry Slaughter will be Put to Order

JAKARTA - In accordance with the policy of the DKI Jakarta provincial government on mitigation of avian influenza spread, chicken slaughter in traditional markets and urban residential areas, particularly in Central Jakarta, will be put to order. By early 2010, Central Jakarta must be free from chicken slaughter. “Chicken vendors and chicken slaughter businesses will be moved to the official poultry collecting facility that has been prepared by the provincial government of DKI, which is at the Rawa Kepiting Animal Slaughterhouse, Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta,” sadi Sylviana Murni on Thursday (28/5).

The poultry collecting facility will have animal health officers, including veterinarians, who will monitor the animal’s health condition and decide whether they are fit for slaughter and consumption. Also, the slaughter facility will be ensured to fulfill all health standards; it will be have a storage room equipped with cooling and will provide delivery service to distribution points for chicken carcasses in traditional markets.
Sylviana said there are at least 180 slaughtering points in Central Jakarta. As much as 163 units are in traditional markets and the rest is in residential areas. Poultry slaughtering in public places and near residential areas increases the risk of H5N1 transmission. Liquid waste such as blood or discharges and poultry organs are also places where other harmful disease agents could thrive.
The regulation of poultry slaughtering was started with disseminating information and giving warning to each business owner. Last week officers of the Livestock Service Office of Central Jakarta had investigated several sites. The officers found unregistered poultry slaughtering businesses in Kemayoran area.
“We did not them any sanction, but we warned the owners to immediately move their business to the proper area in compliance to Local Ordinance (Perda) No. 4 Year 2007 and Governor Directive No. 146 Year 2007 on control and farming of poultry,” said Sylviana.
But, said Sylviana, starting January 2010, offenders of the two regulations will be prosecuted by law. Owners or people involved in illegal poultry slaughtering will be prosecuted with three months in prison or fined 50 million rupiahs. (NEL)
