Ponorogo Lacks AI Vaccines
District of Ponorogo in East Java is currently lacking of Avian Influenza (AI) vaccines. Because of that, vaccination on poultry could not be conducted as planned, which is three time a year. Head of the Animal Health Section of the Livestock Sub-Office in the District Agriculture Office of Ponorogo, Andi Susetyo, yesterday said that based on the poultry population, particularly native chickens, the AI vaccine stock they have now is very little.
Stocks available from the first and second local budget this year are 1.85 million doses or only for 1,850 birds, said Andi. Meanwhile, poultry population in one year reaches up to 3 million birds and as much as 1 million birds are native chickens. If they give vaccination to all of these chickens, stocks will not be sufficient for three times vaccination in one year, except if the stocks are added, he explained.
According to Andi, as much as 16 sub-districts in Ponorogo district are at risk to AI virus contamination. (AG/N-2)
