Palu Activates Avian Influenza Posts

After the sudden die off of chickens due to avian influenza in Besusu administrative village, Palu Timur subdistirct, last Tuesday, the municipal government of Palu, Central Sulawesi, had activated an avian influenza commando post. Poultry traffic going in and out of Palu were also strictly monitored.

Sudden chicken die off had occurred in Besusu administrative village in Palu Timur. This was the first AI case in 2009. “The municipal government of Palu had intensified monitoring on poultry traffic in and out of Palu. Also, avian influenza posts within each administrative village or subdistrict were also activated. The posts involve a number of people from several institutions related to control and mitigation of avian influenza, such as the Health Office, Livestock Service Office, Agriculture Service Office, and others,” said Sudaryono, Head of the Public Relations Office of Palu municipality on Friday (27/2) in Palu.
Last Tuesday, officers from the Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Center of the Livestock Service Office of Southeast Sulawesi had confirmed the cause of the chickens’ death, avian influenza. The chicken carcasses were then destroyed. “Until now we still don’t know how the chickens in Palu Timur had contracted avian influenza. Officers are still investigating it. What’s certain is that after the incident, field officers had gone to conduct elimination and spraying of cages. Vaccination was also initiated. Also was socialization on avian influenza and its prevention,” said Sudaryano. (Ren)
