ND Outbreak in Poultry in Bone

Watampone – Scores of chickens on Jalan Bali, Watampone city, were found suddenly dead yesterday. Investigation by officers from the Livestock Service Office found the birds infected with Newcastle Disease (ND).

The chickens did not exhibit any sign of illness prior to dying. Tanty Wahyuni, one of the chicken owners affected said her chickens died in their pen at the same time. “There was no sign of disease, they just suddenly died. That is why we reported to the local animal health officer,” she said yesterday. Upon receiving the report, Head of the Animal Health Post of the Livestock Service Office of Bone, Dr. Konni, with a number of officers immediately visited the sight to investigate the incident.

Chickens were tested with rapid tests for detecting AI and resulted negative. Pathological signs consistent to ND infection were also found on the dead birds. Dr. Konni said the characteristics of ND are similar to H5N1 avian influenza. A total of 34 chickens owned by citizens living on Jalan Bali died from the outbreak.

Therefore, Dr. Konni asked citizens to routinely vaccinate their chickens and clean the pens regularly. Within the last month, hundreds of chickens suddenly died in Watampone city. Last October, avian influenza was found in Ponceng neighborhood, Manurunge administrative village, Tanette Riattang subdistrict. Tens of laughing cocks owned by citizens in the neighborhood were positive for avian influenza.

Head of the Livestock Service Office of Bone, Aris Handono, said to anticipate further spread of avian influenza, officers sprayed chicken pens and conducted mass vaccination within 14 days after the discovery. Until yesterday, no new case of avian influenza was found. (yos naiobe)
