Monitoring of Poultry in South Lampung Intensified
Monitoring of poultry traffic was intensified following the outbreak of bird flu in Jatiagung sub-district of South Lampung district. Coordinator of the bird flu monitoring team for South Lampung district, Agung Kusmartuti, said that bird flu cases were found in Margagung village (sub-village 4 and 5) of Jatiagung sub-district. “We immediately culled all poultry infected by bird flu,” he said.
Culling was done after they found cases of sudden death chickens to be positive for bird flu. He also said that poultry infected by the H5N1 virus were native chickens. Almost all were not housed, but free-range, he added. For poultry raised in commercial farms, his office has not received any report of sudden death from the farm management.
There were many requests to strengthen monitoring of poultry traffic from Jatiagung to Bandar Lampung municipality. “The district government of South Lampung and municipal government of Bandar Lampung have to apply more stringent monitoring on poultry traffic, particularly those in border areas Way Hui (South Lampung) and Sukarame (Bandar Lampung).
