Livestock Services Test Livestock Blood against Brucella
Pesawaran, Lampung - The Agriculture and Livestock Service Office of Pesawaran district conducted Brucella tests on blood samples from livestock in the region.
Head of the Agriculture and Livestock Service Office of Pesawaran district, Aspiran Syateri, together with Head of the Livestock Division of the office, Emi Yeni Erniati, said they are backing up programs from the Provincial Government of Lampung to free their livestock from Brucella.
He said the disease is dangerous because besides cattle, it could also infect humans.
”Brucella is a very dangerous disease in cattle because it affects the reproductive organs. It threatens cattle farms through frequent abortion,” he said.
Syateri said the case is sporadic and only occasionally occurs in the region, but to anticipate the disease and support the eradication program, the office has sent blood samples from cattle to Disease Investigation Center Region III in Lampung.
The sampling was done to detect Brucella in livestock, particularly cattle, in the region.
”Even though Brucella could be transmitted to humans, infected animals, such as cattle, are still safe for consumption. Infected animals should be sent to slaughter,” he said.
Syateri said the office always conducts intense education and vaccination to prevent the disease. The disease decreases the rate of animal reproduction because it attacks the reproductive organs, causing animals to abort.
”To anticipate this disease, the government conducts education and vaccination because it will be hurtful for farmers if their cattle are affected by this disease. They will inadvertently lose population because the animals are always aborting,” he said.
Based on data from the Agriculture and Livestock Service Office, there are 7,345 cattle, 1,226 water buffalos, 131,515 goats, 3,507 sheep, and 492 pigs in the district. (ANT050/K004)
