Karanganyar Prevents Anthrax by Vaccinating Cattle in Borders

Karanganyar - The Livestock and Agriculture Service Office of Karanganyar district, Central Java, is vaccinating cattle owned by citizens living in border regions on Monday (20/6) as a measure to prevent anthrax introduction.
One of the target areas is Dayu village in Gondangrejo subdistrict. The village shares direct borders with Sragen district. Sragen has suffered an anthrax outbreak last month.
”The term is ring vaccination. So one way of prevention is by vaccinating cattle in borders,” said Head of Veterinary Public Health Section of Karanganyar Livestock and Agriculture Service Office, Rusdajayanto.

Mass vaccination in Dayu village was leaded directly by Karanganyar Regent, Rina Iriani Sri Ratnaningsih. At least 350 head of cattle were targeted for vaccination.

Aside from vaccination, all cattle in the village were examined. All were declared free from anthrax. Officers only found a number of animals suffering from skin disease and worm infestation. These animals are common in cattle and pose no threat to human health.

Despite the good findings, Rina still urges citizens to be more careful when consuming beef. Only beef produced from within Karanganyar should be consumed.
”We do not limit beef distribution in Karanganyar. But, every cattle that comes into our region must have an animal health certificate from the region of origin,” said Rina. (Ferdinand /OL-01)
