Inspection Sacrificial Animals Strengthened
Jakarta - To ensure the health of animals that are to be sacrificed on Eid al-Adha, 17 November 2010, officers of the Livestock and Fishery Service Sub-office of West Jakarta are planning to conduct tighter inspection of sacrificial animals. All Animals in collecting facilities in West Jakarta area will be inspected.
Head of the Livestock and Fishery Service Sub-office of West Jakarta, Kusdiana, said that sacrificial animals imported into West Jakarta area must be watched over vigilantly. This is to prevent the spread of animal diseases, such as anthrax.
Every animal must have a health certificate from the local health office of the animal’s area of origin. Supplying areas that are also anthrax endemic regions are Jonggol, Bogor, Bekasi and Karawang. “Animals coming from those regions will be examined thoroughly,” he said on Monday (1/11/2010).
The same policy also applies to animal coming from other regions. Therefore, officers will visit facilities selling sacrificial animals and educate vendors on identifying health animals. Vendors will also be advised to separate sick animals, so the disease won’t spread to other animals.
“Socialization will also be given to the public, especially for slaughter technicians, because many people still don’t know how to correctly and hygienically slaughter an animal,” Kusdiana said.
Also the office will establish several service posts at the mayor’s office which provides information on sacrificial animal health and sacrificial meat inspection for the public.
Kusdiana said that animals for sacrifice, such as goats must be 4 to 6 months of age and its first set of incisors must already be replaced by permanent teeth, while cattle fit for sacrifice must be at least 2 years old.
Kusdiana has not released the number of officers to be deployed because they are still in the planning and coordination stage. But, as many as 58 students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) will be involved and sent to help with inspection in the field.
