Hog Cholera Outbreak in Lembata
Kupang - At least 300 pigs in Lebata district, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), have died from the viral disease, hog cholera, in the last week.
Affected pigs were found in a number of villages in Ile Ape and Nagawutung subdistricts. The statement was released by Head of the Livestock Service Office of NTT, Semuel Rebo, to reporters in Kupang, Thursday (9/6).
To mitigate the disease, he said, a team from the Livestock Service Office has been sent to Lembata. The team consists of veterinarians and laboratory workers. The team brought vaccines and antibiotics to treat ill animals. Unfortunately, the vaccine could not be administered until laboratory testing of dead pig samples are finished.
Semuel is still unsure whether the outbreak is truly hog cholera or another kind of virus. “We are still waiting for laboratory results. Currently what the team is doing is treating sick animals with antibiotics,” he said.
Dead pigs are reportedly buried by citizens. Meanwhile, the government has issued a ban on transporting pigs into or out of Lembata to other islands to prevent further spread of the disease. (Palce Amalo/OL-01)
