Guelph Students’ Visit to CIVAS
Bogor - Three vet students from the Canada Guelph Univeristy came to CIVAS ON July 30th, 2007. They were Jessica Wu, Laetitia Tatiersky and Michael Mossop. They came in terms of a Global Vets program from the Ontario Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Guelph Univeristy, Canada. Global Vets is a program that provides opportunities for students to learn about animal health in developing countries. This program was started since 1997 for second year students. These three students travel not only to Indonesia but also to Thailand and Vietnam.
At CIVAS, Jessica and friends were involved in some of CIVAS’ internal activities, visiting a sector 2 poultry farm (PT. Manggis Farm) and backyard farms (KEPRAK) in Sukabumi. They also helped in collecting blood samples for a ring vaccination program. The students were then invited to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University and the Animal Hospital of Bogor Agricultural University in Darmaga. During that visit, they participated in the Socialization of the Veterinary Act Draft seminar by drh Tri Satya Putri Naipospos MPhil PhD and a lecture by Dr. Denny W Lukman for post-graduate students from the Quarantine Office. The three students also visited an animal clinic in Sunter. In this clinic they had the chance to watch an operation of macerated fetus by drh Cucu. The next day they visited the Taurus Dairy Farm to observe and discuss about dairy cows and dairy goats in Indonesia. CIVAS in collaboration with the Indonesian Veterinary Student Association people from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Airlangga University was able to involve Micheal and Laetitia in a community service program in Kediri for five days. Jessica, unfortunately, was unable to participate because of illness and had to be hospitalized for a few days. At Kediri, Micheal and Laetitia had to socialize directly with the village people there, because one of the programs was to provide education and extensions for the village people, and also participate in a vaccination program for the livestock of the village people.
In their last day at CIVAS, they did a presentation on what they have done during their 2 week stay. They also presented about the Ontario Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Guelph University and about the Global Vets program itself. August 12th, 2007, was their last day at Bogor, Indonesia, but the collaboration between CIVAS and Global Vets will not end here.
