DOC from Malaysia in Singkawang

Singkawang - After discovered last week in Pontianak city, West Kalimantan, day old chicks (DOC) smuggled from Serawak state in Malaysia were now found in Singkawang city.
The chicks have even been raised by a farmer for 19 days. General Chariman of the Poultry Agribusiness Association of West Kalimantan, Bambang Mulantono, on Monday (14/2/2011) said there were 2,500 chicks from Malaysia in Singkawang city.

“The smuggling incident was revealed after the farmer complained of chickens suffering from upper respiratory symptoms and nasal discharge. He then called a veterinarian. Upon questioning and tracing, it turned out that the chicks were smuggled from Malaysia,” said Bambang.
Bambang added that the farmer has twice used smuggled chicks. These chicks, besides ruining the market due to their significantly lower price compared to local chicks, are also dangerous because they are without disease-free certification. The finding of disease chickens raised from smuggled chicks is proof of it. (Agustinus Handoko | Ed. Erlangga Djumena)
