Citizens in Bogor Urged to be Careful When Buying Meat

Bogor - The Agriculture Service Office of Bogor city advises citizens to be careful in selecting and buying meat. Head of the office, Dr. Herlien Krinaningsih, warned citizens not be fooled by cheap poor quality meat. ”Examine the meat quality, even if it’s a bit more expensive, it is okay,” she said.
Dr. Herlien said buyers should check the physical condition of the meat, its color, smell, and when touched the meat should be cool and not be rubbery. After the discovery of 3 kilograms of expired imported meat sold by seasonal meat vendors during a sudden inspection by Bogor Vice Mayor last week in Anyar Market, the office has continuously supervised a number of markets.

This is because during Ramadhan, demand for meat increases and many seasonal vendors appear, looking for profit. Vendors with poor knowledge on meat quality often sell meat unsuitable for human consumption at low price.
”People need to be more cautious, if the meat is sold cheap, there could be a problem,” said Herlien.
The Agriculture Service Office is trying to protect consumers by conducting supervision of vendors and slaughter facilities to ensure the quality of meat sold in markets. But, she also advises the public to be more aware and careful in buying meat.
Herlien said there is enough meat stock for Bogor city until Eid al-Fitr 1431 Hijriah.
Meanwhile, the increase of meat price in markets is due to high demand at the current time. “In accordance with the law of the market, high demand causes increase in price,” she said. [Despite price increase], there has been a decrease of meat price by Rp. 5,000 at the time being. Before, the price had reached Rp 70,000/kg, but now it is only Rp 65,000/kg.
Herlien said the office has warned meat vendors in a number of markets to not sell expired meat. The Agriculture Service Office of Bogor city will terminate the trading permit of any vendor found selling expired meat. (LR/K004)
