Chickens in Bengkulu Positive for Avian Influenza
Bengkulu - Tens of chickens that suddenly died on July 19, 2010, in Bandung Baru village in Kepahyang district and Pagar Dewa administrative village in Bengkulu city were positive for avian influenza.
Chickens in Bandung Baru village, Kepahyang district, Bengkulu province were determined Avian Influenza (H5N1) positive after examined by local infectious-animal-disease-control officers, said Coordinator of Avian Influenza Monitoring Center for Bengkulu Region, Emran Kuswadi.
In Bandung Baru village, 11 chickens had died from AI, while the cause of death of scores of birds in Pagar Dewa administrative village could not be confirmed because villagers had thrown away the carcasses.
The incident was known after a citizen reported to AI control officers in the field.
“We have deployed officers to investigate the incident, tests conducted confirmed the chickens were AI positive,” said Emran.
Other birds around the area must be quarantined to prevent disease spread.
“We have visited the site to help inform citizens on what to do when they meet such incidences,” said Emran.
Birds around the area will be tested and if necessary culled and burned with its pen.
Citizens in the area are asked to stay vigilant and immediately report to local officers or government agencies if they find any symptom to prevent the disease from spreading.
Emran said citizens must know what to do when they find dead birds. They have to burn or bury the carcasses and not throw them away carelessly.
After touching dead birds, citizens must wash themselves and change into clean clothes.
Meanwhile in response to 1000 birds that died in Suka Raja, Suka Maju, and Dermayu villages in Seluma district, Bengkulu province, three weeks ago, Emran said it was caused by Newcastle Disease (ND) and not avian influenza (H5N1).
