Chicken Price Increased, Vendors Stopped Sales for a Week
CILEGON (Pos Kota) – Chicken vendors in a number of traditional markets in Cilegon and Anyer, Banter, are planning to stop sales for a week, from 6 to 11 March, 2008. This was caused by high prices of chicken carcasses, which now has reached 14,200 rupiahs/kilogram. According to Rohmah, a chicken vendor in Cilegon Market, stopping sales was a decision made by the association of chicken vendors of Cilegon, Merak, and Anyer.
”How could we not stop sales? Every day the price continues to rise. If things keep on going like this, we could go bankrupt because consumers will shift to eating tempe and salted fish. What would my family eat then?” said Rohmah, 37 years old, on Monday (3/3).
A similar statement was said by Wati, 42 years old, a chicken vendor who had been in the business for 15 years. She said that since the price chicken carcass had gone up since two weeks ago, here sales had decreased drastically.
Usually, Wati can sell 50-60 chickens/day, but since the chicken carcass price had reached 17,000 rupiahs/chicken, her sales had lessened down to 50%. (haryono/ds/g)
