Cattle Shipment to Sumatra on the Rise

Serang - As previous years, there is an increase in cattle shipment from Java to Sumatra after Eid al-Fitr holidays. One to two year old cattle are sent for fattening and are to be sold during Eid al-Adha, which is two months later. Increase in cattle shipment from Java to Sumatra is estimated to continue until the end of this month.
Head of Agriculture Quarantine Center Class II Cilegon in Banten, Agus Sunanto, on Thursday (23/9), said that in normal conditions, cattle shipment from Java to Sumatra does not occur every day. “In a week, there would be two to three cattle trucks going to Sumatra,” he said.

Meanwhile, after Eid al-Fitr holidays, there has been cattle shipment every day from Java. Lately in could reach 2 to 10 trucks a day, with each truck carrying 8 to 10 heads of cattle.
Agus said there are many people and feedlots in Sumatra buying young cattle from Java. These cattle, which cost 6 to 7 million rupiahs per head, would be fattened and sold for 9 to 10 million rupiah for Eid al-Adha in mid November.
Quarantine officers will check the documents of each and every cattle shipment. Health examination will only be conducted on 10 percent of the animals shipped if they have Animal Health Certificates from the local livestock service office in their area of origin.
But if there is no Animal Health Certificate, health examination will be conducted on all animals on the truck. “Most shipments have Animal Health Certificates, so quarantine inspection does not take too much time, only two to three hours,” said Agus. (cas)
