Business Opportunity in Native Chicken Farming Still Open
Jakarta - The opportunity for small, micro, and cooperative businesses in local poultry farming, particularly native chickens, is still open. The demand for native chickens is always increasing, while only a small portion of it has been met
General Chairman of the Indonesian Local Poultry Farmer Association, Ade Zulkarnaen, on Tuesday (14/9) in Sukabumi, West Java, said the daily demand for native chickens from Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi is 280,000 birds, and only 5 percent of it has been fulfilled.
“The native chicken market in Jabodetabek is approximately 45% of the national market. Therefore the opportunity is still wide open,” he said.
Ade explained that increase in native chicken market will not disturb the existing market for broilers because the characteristics of the consumers are different. Native chicken consumers in general are people with good economy and others with high awareness to consume organic products or products without genetic engineering.
The Ministry of Agriculture, said Ade, is currently preparing a blueprint for native chicken development. Within the blueprint will be a layout of the development system for native chickens. Also, it will also protect native chicken farming businesses from large investors.
“Native chicken farming businesses is protected by the government. Only small, micro, and cooperative businesses are allowed, large investors can not participate. The maximum farming capacity is 10,000 birds. From this limitation, people’s farms are expected to thrive. Hopefully the blueprint is already signed by October 2010,” said Ade.
Through this blue print, hopefully within the next 10 years, the native chicken market will reach 25% of the national chicken consumption. Currently it is still 5.5%.
With a target of 25% of the market, native chicken supply in the next 10 years is expected to reach 400 million birds per year. If the price of one native chicken is Rp 60,000, the value of native chicken trade in total will reach Rp 2.4 trillion. This will definitely power the local and rural economy. Also to be added is the value of feed trade and processing services.
Now there are only 3,400 intensive native chicken farmers. Outside of that there are approximately 1 million households raising around 35 native chickens each. With proper development, 100,000 households are expected to become intensive native chicken farmers.
Hasan Bisri, a local poultry farmer in Pasuruan, East Java, said farming local poultry, such as ducks, is also profitable. But farming poultry is very dependent on the price of feed. Currently the price of a number of feed ingredients is on the rise, such as rice pollard at Rp 1,300 per kilogram and corn at Rp 2,000 per kilogram. (MAS)
