Birth of Sumatran Tigers in the Taman Safari Indonesia
CISARUA – Four Sumatran tiger cubs were born in the ex-situ conservation site of Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) Cisarua on December 4th, 2007. The four cubs were delivered normally and were results of a mating of Ulu (12), a male Sumatran tiger, and Desi (10), a female Sumatran tiger at the Sumatran Tiger Breeding Center in Taman Safari Indonesia.
Sumatran tigers are highly protected and nearly extinct. Three of the cubs are female and one is a male. All of the cubs each weigh 1.3 kg and are currently on a diet of specifically formulated milk for carnivores.
They are intensively nursed in the nursery room of the Animal Hospital in TSI Cisarua Bogor under the care of the TSI medical team, whom hand raised the cubs separated from their mother. “It is because the mother could not care and properly feed the cubs, therefore we had to intervene,” said Public Relations of TSI Cisarua Bogor, Arif Rahman.
Besides the TSI medical team, the four cubs are also nurtured by a nursing staff named Giles from the Australian Zoo in Brisbane. Currently he is conducting a comparison study on Sumatran tigers. “With the birth of these animals, which are endemic to Sumatra, Taman Safari Indonesia has contributed greatly to the conservation of nearly extinct animals in Indonesia,” he said.
