Bird Flu Attacks Chickens in Wonosobo
WONOSOBO – Again avian influenza attacks chickens in Wonosobo. After Krajan Sudungdewo Kertek and Larangan Kaliwiro sub-villages, now chickens in Ngasinan Kidul sub-village of Kalikajar administrative village are infected. As much as 5 chickens owned by 5 local people were found dead on Monday (3/3) morning. This incident was immediately reported to the local administration office and was forwarded to the Livestock and Fisheries Services Office of Wonosobo district. Rapid tests done by the Livestock and Fisheries Services Office were positive for bird flu.
Head of the Veterinary and Animal Health Sub-Office of the Livestock and Fisheries Services Office, Sutomo, DVM, with his team are preparing to spray disinfectants and depopulate remaining chickens.
According to Singgih Kuncoro, Head of Kalikajar administrative village, that morning citizens were gathered to receive information and explanations about bird flu. Also included is its transmission to other birds and humans. At first they all agree to depopulate the remaining chickens with a compensation of 10 thousand rupiahs from the government.
“Plans were that all chickens in the same house as the dead chickens will be depopulated by Livestock and Fisheries Service Officers. People had agreed that time. But, when depopulation was to be done, people were objecting, while before they have already agreed and said they understood the hazards if it were to infect humans,” he explained yesterday.
Only 3 chickens owned by Marsono, a local citizen, were allowed to be depopulated. The three chickens immediately were paid as much as 15,000 rupiahs. One hen was paid 10,000 rupiahs, and two other chicks were paid 5,000 rupiahs.
He asked citizens to be cautious of the disease, because some of the dead chickens have been thrown to the river by some people. His office also had coordinated with medics from the Kalikajar Community Health Center to give out extensions.
“We will still conduct monitoring. If anybody exhibits bird flu symptoms, we will immediately bring them to the community health center,” he said.
Separately, Dr Sutomo confirmed it. At first 15 chickens owned by 5 citizens were supposed to be depopulated. In the end officers did spraying on the village’s environment. Poultry traffic is limited to reduce the risk of spreading. (lis)
