Beef Expensive, 50% Reduction of Slaughter

TASIKMALAYA (SINDO) – The increase in beef price in several markets in Tasikmalaya district lately has caused a decrease in the number of cattle slaughtered in the Tasikmalaya Animal Slaughterhouse. The reduction is estimated to reach 50% from normal. “Before we slaughter an average of 20 cattle every day, now after the price problem, it is reduced to only 10 cattle,” said Head of the Livestock, Fisheries, and Marine Services Office of Tasikmalaya district, Budi Utarma, yesterday.

Budi said that other than beef price increase, the reduction in cattle slaughtered at the slaughterhouse is also due to decrease in demand. Many beef vendors in Tasikmalaya lessened slaughter because they were worried it would go unsold. “We suspect vendors reduce slaughter because consumer’s demand of beef has also decreased,” he said.
