Ban of Beef Importation from US is soon to be Lifted

The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture will soon lift the ban on beef importation from America. As much as 2 slaughterhouses, 1 meat processing factory and 1 meat storage facility has been inspected and was announced to be free from BSE. Even, the Director of Veterinary Public Health, Turni Rusli Syamsudin, said that America has met the safety and halality standards. “Importation depends on the industry,” said Turni.

Until now, Indonesia has banned meat importation from America because of the discovery of BSE in December 2003. At that time, importation ban was issued by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Rini Marini Soemarno, through Decree (Surat Keputusan) No, 757/MPP/Kep/12/2003 about temporary ban of animal and animal product importation from America.
Meanwhile, Chief of the National Meat Processing Association (Nampa), Betsy Monoarfa, thought the government overreacted concerning the issues on Foot and Mouth Disease. This was obvious from the ban on beef importation from India and Canada.
