Bali Provincial Government Set Back Rabies Free Target to 2015

Denpasar - The 2012 target for Bali province’s freedom from rabies seems to be out of grasp. Many cases are still emerging in the island.
Head of the Public Relations and Protocol Bureau of Bali Provincial Government, Ketut Teneng, admitted the target is set back, from 2012 to 2015. “Freedom from rabies in Bali is targeted in 2015, by the end of 2012 we target rabies case free,” said Ketut Teneng in the press room of the Governor’s Office on Tuesday (24/5).

Teneng said rabies eradication efforts in Bali are still ongoing. By the end of 2011, the provincial government target to vaccinate 300,000 dogs or 70% of the total dog population in Bali, which is around 400,000 dogs.
Even after 2012 until 2015, vaccination will still be prioritized to achieve freedom from rabies in Bali. To support vaccination and other operational needs, the government admits it still needs more funds.
Therefore, the Provincial Government of Bali has applied for an additional 1 billion rupiahs of funds to the central government. For this year, the central government has provided 210 million rupiahs of funds and vaccines, while the Provincial Government of Bali has prepared a budget of 6 billion rupiahs. (OL-5)
