An Avian Influenza Suspect Patient Died in Jakarta

Jakarta — A new Avian Influenza suspect patient in Jakarta, Puguh Dwi Yanto (23), citizen of RT 10 RW 06, Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, had died. This is unexpected because throughout 2011 Avian Influenza almost never occurred in Jakarta.

The patient is buried in a coffin in Budi Dharma Cemetery, Semper, Cilincing, North Jakarta, last Sunday (8/1/2012).

Head of Public Health Control Section of North Jakarta Health Suboffice, Ati Kusmaningsih, said there is high suspicion that the patient suffered from Avian Influenza infection. “Mucous samples from patient’s nose and throat, and blood sample are being tested at the Health Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health,” she said.

Sriyati (48), the patient’s mother, said since her son’s body was returned from Tangerang Regional Hospital it had been bathed and immediately sealed in a coffin by the hospital. “When we prayed for him at home, we were not allowed to open the coffin,” she said.

Sriyati said Puguh suffered high fever since New Year’s Eve. On Monday, January 2nd, Puguh was brought to Satya Negara Hospital in Sunter and there the doctor suspected he suffered gastritis.

The next day, Tuesday, Puguh was treated at home, but his health was not improving, he even could not get up on his own. On Wednesday, Sriyati took Puguh back to Satya Negara Hospital and the doctor diagnosed Puguh with dengue fever and heart problems, and Puguh had to be treated at the hospital.

By Friday, said Sriyati, without knowing why, the doctor referred Puguh to Prof. Dr. Sulianti Saroso Hospital for Infectious Diseases, but was rejected because the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit was full of patients. The next day, Saturday, Satya Negara Hospital moved Puguh to Tangerang Regional Hospital which also has special installations of Avian Influenza patients.

“But, before arriving to Tangerang Regional Hospital, my son had died,” said Sriyati. His youngest sister, Soraya (5), is now also suspected to have Avian Influenza infection. She is now treated in a special Avian Influenza isolation room in Persahabatan Hospital. (Madina Nusrat | Robert Adhi Ksp)
