To Anticipate AI, Sukoharjo Intensified Spraying of Markets

Agriculture Office of Sukoharjo district intensified spraying of markets that sell poultry in this area to anticipate bird flu or avian influenza (AI) outbreak.  “For markets that we know have poultry vendors, we will intensify the routine spraying of disinfectants to once a week,” said Head of the Livestock Division of the Agriculture Office of Sukoharjo district, Giyarti. According to Giyarti, AI cases are predicted to continue emerge until the end of the rainy season which is in May.

She said that rainy season often produces plenty of standing water and areas with a lot of standing water is more vulnerable to AI.
Another effort done to prevent spread of AI in Sukoharjo is by tightening the traffic of poultry trade with and from other areas. Also, Giyarti said, the Agriculture Office of Sukoharjo has advised citizens, particularly those in residential areas, to house their poultry.
“This is also one of our efforts to anticipate the spread of AI. More than half of all the birds have been housed,” she said.
The housing of poultry, she said, will be continuously monitored along with socialization about the dangers of AI.  “Teams from the Agriculture Office will take turns in monitoring all villages,” she said.
