Another Human Death

Another bird flu positive patient had died. TSM, a 32 year old female, started to exhibit illness on the 3rd of January, 2008, and was hospitalized at Sari Asih Tangerang Hospital on January 9, 2008. But the patient insisted to go home on January 10, 2008, at 5 pm and died at 6:15 pm. TSM was ill together with YF, a 16 year old male. This is the 118th human bird flu case in Indonesia and the 95th death.
YF is a citizen of South Bekasi in West Java, while TSM is a citizen of Cilongok village in Tangerang district, Banten Province.
“So the human case fatality rate of bird flu infection is 80.5 percent,” said Head of the Public Communication Center of the Ministry of Health, Lily S Sulistyowati in a press conference on Monday (14/1) in Jakarta.

The patient YF was confirmed positive of bird flu by polymerase chain reaction testing at the Research and Development Center Laboratory of the Ministry of Health (Balitbang Depkes) and the Eijkman Molecular Biology Laboratory on January 10, 2008.
Meanwhile, the patient TSM was confirmed positive of bird flu by the Research and Development Center Laboratory of the Ministry of Health on January 13 and the Eijkman Molecular Biology Laboratory on January 14, 2008.
YF suffered fever, cough, difficult breathing and a sore throat in January 1st, 2008. Three days later he was hospitalized in Mitra Keluarga Hospital in Bekasi and on January 10, 2008, referred to Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta.
His risk factors were a sudden die off of chicken around his house about 2 months ago and consumption of 3 half-cooked eggs.
“Until now, the source of this disease [bird flu] is still from poultry. The public should stay cautious and responsive to sick poultry and sudden die offs,” she said. (EVY)
