200 Kg of Poultry Meat Confiscated, Bird Flu Suspected
Denpasar - Officers confiscated 200 kilograms of illegal duck meat sold in Badung market, Bali.
The raid was held by a collaborative team to ensure the health and safety of meat consumed by the public during Eid al-Fitr holidays.
The operation involved the Livestock Service Office of Bali, the Livestock, Fishery and Marine Service Office of Denpasar city, and Pamong Praja police. It targeted meat vendors in Badung and Sempidi market.
”We acquired 200 kilograms of illegal duck meat. It was shipped from Java and then sold by five vendors in Badung Market,” said Head of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Division of Bali Livestock Service Office, I Wayan Mardiana, on Wednesday (24/8/2011).
Mardiana said illegal distribution of meat that is lacking in safety and wholeness requirements is still found in both traditional markets. Inspection found a fault in the documents. The product listed is frozen chicken, but the actual product brought into Bali is duck meat.
He said this shipment of duck meat from Java is violating Governor Regulation No. 44 year 2005. In addition, a distribution letter from the Directorate General of Livestock Services states that all meat transported between islands must be frozen.
The governor regulation requires poultry imported into Bali to be in the form of a carcass. “The ducks were only de-feathered. The head, feet, and entire innards are still intact,” he said.
Officers suspect the intact birds could potentially introduce avian influenza from Java to Bali. (ful|Rohmat)
